Petition: Fare Freeze Now!

In the most recent budget, the Mayor and Ottawa City Council are slated to raise transit fares yet again for our City, even for the Equipass, the pass for low-income individuals. People are already squeezed for cash and we pay some of the highest transit fares in North America here in Ottawa. This is unacceptable. This is why our campaign is calling on the Mayor and City Council to implement a fare freeze and to look towards reducing fares over time so that we can finally give low-income people and other transit riders a break.

WHEREAS the Mayor and City Council are slated to raise fares once again in the upcoming City Budget for 2019-2020;

WHEREAS in Ottawa, we pay one of the highest cash fares in North America;

WHEREAS transit riders and especially low-income transit riders are already squeezed enough financially;

We call on the Mayor and current City Council:

-To implement a fare freeze to decrease the financial burden on transit riders

-To look towards a reduction in transit fares for future budgets

    If we want citizens to use public transit, consider dropping or eliminating fares and adding service.

    Reliability is non-existent. OC Transpo passengers are not getting what we are paying for. Buses have to start running on schedule before rates increase. Service improvements must come after an I crease; schedules need to increase in frequency, so etching that hasn’t happened since the turn of the century.

    62 minutes waiting for a #6 bus at 11:20 am with clear roads and light traffic! Every week waiting at Bank near Cooper for the number 6 bus during rush hour and you only use the short buses so they go right past you most of the time or they are dangerously over crowded! Come on man!!!

    Lower transit fares mean more universal access and higher usage. Municipal transit should be for all!

    If fares go up ridership will go down even more. Freeze or drop the fares for more ridership.

    More people will use the transit system if the fares drop significantly. OcTranspo will do better financially by dropping fares than by raising them. Transit needs to be attractive and BETTER than driving!
